Laws about Young People in Scotland

Rights and Responsibilities are closely tied in with Rules and Laws and, similarly,
some of these are made especially for young people.


At the age of 7
you can open a bank account


At the age of 8
you can be found guilty of a crime


At the age of 12
you can make a will
you can buy a pet
you can see a doctor on your own
you can have a solicitor


At the age of 13
you can get a Saturday job
you can work for no more than 2 hours on school days and Sundays


At the age of 14
you can be taken into a bar by a responsible adult, but not drink alcohol


At the age of 16
you can leave school
you can leave home
you can have sex
you can get married
you can buy cigarettes
you can be sent to a Young Offenders’ Institution
you can ride a 50cc moped
you can drink alcohol with a meal in a restaurant


At the age of 17
you can drive a car or a motorbike and can fly an aeroplane


At the age of 18
you can vote
you can buy alcohol
you can place a bet in a betting shop
you can get a tattoo
you can buy fireworks
you are entitled to the minimum wage


At the age of 21
you can adopt a child
you can drive a bus or lorry
you can stand for election
