Coping with Anger

We all have problems at some time in our lives. In any situation [once you recognise that there is a problem] you always have options for dealing with problems - you can ignore them, deal with them or walk away from them. Unless you deal with them, problems have a nasty habit of coming back.

How to Resolve Arguments

Everybody has arguments and that is okay. You can't agree with everyone all the time nor can you be expected to be in a good mood all the time. However, it is easy to let arguments get out of hand if they aren't resolved quickly. If an argument gets to the stage where people start using violence to solve it, then this is very serious. People can get hurt or even get into trouble with the police.

So, how do you stop an argument from reaching that stage? Well, the list opposite has a few ways that can help.

Dealing with Angry Conflict

  1. Accept the blame for anything you have done wrong.
  2. Do not change the subject.
  3. Only run away from a situation if you feel unsafe.
  4. Deal with a problem at the time, if you can, without becoming upset or angry.
  5. Do not resort to physical or verbal abuse.
  6. If you cannot resolve the conflict find a 3rd party who can help.
  7. Listen carefully to the other person and respect their feelings and opinions.
  8. If in doubt about the truth of a situation ask someone else who would know.
  9. It is okay to differ in opinion and it is not neccessary to try to change someone's opinion.
  10. Work towards solving the problem.
  11. There is no need for either party to win. A solution will never be found if both parties want to win at the expense of the other.
  12. Think about the other person's feelings.
  13. Do not assume you know what the other perosn is thinking.
  14. Do not bring up the past.
  15. Don't put the other person down. Name calling will only make things worse.
  16. Find a compromise that suits you both.

Above all stay calm
